Surfboards on Parade Raises Over $100K for Skin Cancer

By on October 16, 2014

Surfboards on Parade was a very special event that took place the last three months around Orange County. Twenty-eight shapers collaborated with artists to create one of a kind surfboard wonders for a great cause: to raise awareness for skin cancer. First the boards were displayed in business all over the OC. Then, last Saturday night at the Waterfront Hilton in HB, on a night dubbed “Night of a Million Waves”, the boards were auctioned off to the highest bidders. When it was all said and sold, over $100,000 was raised for the beneficiary Hoag Hospital, who will use the money to further research and help eradicate skin cancer.

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. More than 3.5 million new cases are diagnosed each year — more than all other cancers combined, yet it is a type of cancer that we possess the tools to prevent.

Founded by the Rotary Club of Huntington Beach, Surfboards on Parade is an unprecedented community participatory event where acclaimed artists are invited to create art on surfboards shaped by invited acclaimed shapers. The surfboard art will be at sponsored locations throughout the City to drive business. The events from January through October 2014 coincide with the 100-year anniversary of surfing at Huntington Beach pier.

This event is the perfect blend of art and giving back to the community. We believe that it will have a huge positive economic impact on the city, as well as promoting awareness of our beloved Surf City potentially around the world.

The plan is to promote this participatory art exhibition locally, regionally, nationally and internationally and there is an up swelling of community support.

28 Surfboards will be featured in this exciting collaboration of surfboard shapers and talented artists who will create one-of-a kind art!

Join us as we collectively come together in a soulful and meaningful movement to eradicate skin cancer.
