Surfers Loses Arm in West Australian Shark Attack

A 23-year-old surfer was attacked by a shark at Kelpids Beach in Wylie Bay, West Australia yesterday. The shark was estimated to be between nine and 12 feet long. Among other injuries, the surfer lost one of his arms below the elbow and his hand below the wrist. Sharks are not uncommon in W.A and there have been seven fatal attacks between 2010 and 2013. In recent times the government had implemented a baiting drum line but stopped the program after the Australian EPA deemed the method ineffective. In the meantime, the beaches have been closed while authorities figure out what to do next. It was reported that several sharks had been seen in the area in the recent weeks and days leading up to the attack.
